Lauren at Baste & Gather had the coolest idea- actually hand-make over your ‘mom uniform’. Do you wear pretty much the same thing every day just because it’s easy and you can throw it on quickly in the morning? I certainly do. It usually consists of jeans (or capris depending on season), a tee and fleece hoodie if it’s cold out. You may have even caught a glimspe of me in my slippers (but they’re really Minnetonka moccasins with a sole so not really slippers… right?).

So, it’s definitely time to take a little time for myself by making over my ‘momiform’. After scrolling through Pinterest for a little bit (hours, days & weeks) I found a few images for my inspiration.

I’m really loving olive colored denim these days as well as gray and navy colors. And you can’t go wrong with black! So, with those things in mind I decided on using Sewholic’s Renfrew tee and Itch to Stitch’s Paulina for tops and the new Boyfriend Cardigan as a layering piece. For the bottoms I choose Selvage Designs Syrah skirt in knee length and the perennial favorite- Jocole Skinnies.

Pretty, pretty patterns

Without further ado here is my first Momiform- olive Jocole Skinnies and black Sewholic Renfrew. This outfit was SO easy to sew up and looks really classy. I used a stretch twill from Joann’s for the skinnies and a black french terry for the shirt. The Renfrew is my go-to pattern for a tee, I’ve made it with a v-neck and the scoop and love both. I do have to mash sizes a bit but now that I’ve figured that out every tee I make turns out perfect. In hindsight I wish I had used a better quality twill for the skinnies. These are pretty stiff and don’t move with me very much hence the bunching at the knee. If anyone has any leads on a good olive stretch denim or twill, let me know!

When the weather turns cooler I’ll just throw on a Boyfriend Cardigan. This knit is a poly/rayon jersey from Stylish Fabric. It’s lightweight but perfect for layering. I left off the collar and pockets which made it a quick sew and took well under 2 yards.

I love wearing skirts! Especially knit skirts. They’re so comfortable and make you look so much more put together. This Syrah Skirt from Selvage Designs totally fits the bill. It has two waist options, one of which has ruching on the side that would look great with a more cropped top (maybe Seamwork’s Astoria?). One way I’ll be wearing this skirt is with a tee (Renfrew here again!), my favorite jean jacket and chucks. I didn’t make the jean jacket but I just have to tell you- you need a great jean jacket! Make it or buy it, just get one! I especially think the cropped kind are flattering. The one that I’m wearing here is actually made from a cool denim-look french terry which is just SO comfortable. I could take a nap in this jacket. It’s not a cheap brand but I lucked out and found it for around $30 on Amazon a couple months ago.

Loose the jacket and add some nice ballet flats and I've got a cute and classy outfit for dressier occasions.

And finally, the outfit that was my main focus for this MAKEover. My original idea for this was kelly green wide leg pants using the Colette Juniper pattern. I completed a muslin in a black sateen from Joann’s but I ultimately decided not to include them. That straight, wide leg look is just not flattering on this short and curvy girl. I will say I was really please with the pattern and I’m happy I did the muslin because it was my first zip fly. I love learning new skills and I think the Juniper pattern did a nice job of walking me through.

After reevaluating my options I decided to just work with the olive Jocole Skinnies. I paired the skinnies with Itch to Stitch’s Paulina with a modification. I don’t love the layered look under the arms so I just cut the main piece without the cutout and proceeded as normal. I really like that this top is actually two full layers at the front and back and not just a small piece sewn at the hem. Although I do think it runs a bit short. I’m average waisted and 5’4″ and it’s a little short on me. Next time I make it I’ll lengthen by 1.5-2″. For the main navy knit I used my verrrrry favorite jersey from Mood Fabrics. The content is rayon/lycra which gives it such a nice hand as well as being on the heavier side for a jersey. I’m trying really hard to love the bootie trend. I really like them on almost everyone else I see but I’m just not sure I love them on myself.

I purchased the blue check shirting from Joann's. I cut it on the bias to give it a little more interest.

I love working with shirting fabrics and don't get to do it very often.

Now I’m all set for running around doing all the things… but in style!
