Boyfriend Cardigan Sew Along Day 4

We are wrapping up the official sewing portion of the Boyfriend Cardigan Sew Along today! Grab your shawl collar pieces or your hood and band pieces and let’s finish those cardigans!

The instructions for assembling the shawl neckband and attaching it on the Boyfriend Cardigan  are all found in the pattern and clear and easy to follow along with.

There is a copy of the LIVE sew along from the Facebook Support Group below that you can watch if you need a visual on how it is done. It’s super easy! Just assemble the shawl neckband piece and then match up the center seam with the center back seam. Then clip the bottom of the neckband in place and match up the raw edges working your way towards the marking on the front cardigan piece. Once you get to that marking, you will be easing the neckline and shawl neckband together.

If you chose to do the hood option on the Boyfriend Cardigan , simply follow the instructions for attaching the hood and neckband found in the pattern tutorial.

Be sure to pin the neckback smoothly where the front of the hood attaches to the body of the cardigan. Straighten it out a bit to allow your neckband to be flat. The seam where the hood meets the body is between the top two clips in the photo below.

Prefer to skip the neckband and hood all together? That’s easy to do also! Just turn the front edge under to the wrong side 1/2″ and topstitch down.

After you finish up the neckline, your Boyfriend Cardigan is complete!! The brushed sweater knit from Sly Fox Fabrics was perfect for this shawl collar version!

Do you use a 2 way or does it require a 4 way stretch for this boyfriend cardigan ?

    • Keira Wood says:

2 way stretch is fine. The look of the cardigan will change depending on your fabric choice. Light to medium weight fabrics like rayon spandex and sweater knit will create a drapey cardigan. Heavier fabrics like ponte and french terry will create a more structured cardigan. Hope that helps. Happy Sewing! ~K
